If you aren’t aware, PuTTY has been one of the best tools to connect various operating systems like Linux, Unix, Windows, Mac OSX etc. As PuTTY didn’t succeed in showing the different connection logs in a single tab, it came up with the new PuTTY Connection Manager to show multiple connections in a single tab.

It is not so tough to install PuTTY on your computer. The whole program is written in C# and so, you can perform a quick installation on your PC. But before we proceed, make sure that .NET 2.0 is installed on your PC.

Getting Started with PuTTY Connection Manager

PuTTY Connection Manager is more often known as a client add-on for computers running on Windows platform. So, after installing for the first time on your computer, it asks you to browse the exact location of the files, when you open the program.

So, browse to the location of the files and select it. Click OK.

Now, you can see PuTTY with multiple tabs, showing different connections. Then, use the pushpin button present in the side to use the connection manager.

From the tools menu, select Configuration by right-clicking on any of the tabs.

You can include the automatic login macro in the configuration dialog. This will also specify the passing command line, which is sent to PuTTY.

From the Tools menu or Configuration button, select it and you can see the following window.

Features of PuTTY Connection Manager

Display Multiple PuTTY Session Tabs

Instead of opening each session in a different window, you can use tabs in the PuTTY connection manager.

To enable this, go to Tools > Option > Enable additional timing for PuTTY capture (ms) and set the value as 500ms. Now, you can open PuTTY window in a new tab.

Encrypted Configuration Database

PuTTY, by default, saves all the information in the windows registry. None of this data is encrypted. So, if you want to keep the encrypted data, you can enable this feature in few simple steps.

  • Download AES Encyption Library (pcmcrypt.dll)
  • Move the file to the original location of the program (C:Program FilesPuTTY Connectio Manager
  • Close PuTTY CM and open it again (restart)
  • Now, head over to Tools > Options > Database, now see that under the encryption section, you should see the following message. It makes sure that the file was installed successfully.

Now, select File > New > Database and enter the exact information, which is shown below in the sample image. And, make sure you create a strong password for security purpose.

  1. Database name: putty-secure-sessions
  2. Enable database encryption, by checking the box.
  3. Don’t forget to select AES Rinjdael Managed 256 bits
  4. Enter your passphrase.
  5. Select “Create Database”
  1. File > Save Database to a physical File.
  2. You can see the putty-secure-sessions under the connections menu.
  3. Right-click on putty-secure-sessions, select New > Connection.

You’ve successfully created a secure database in PuTTY Connection Manager.

PuTTY Alternatives and Download

Poderosa Connection Manager

Poderosa is an independent application, whereas many other alternatives use PuTTY in the background. But, this doesn’t.

It allows you to open multiple sessions at the same time. You can connect using Telnet and SSH. It also has a better UI. Ponderosa also supports plugins. You can avail more features by using plugins.

SuperPuTTY

This is almost similar to the PuTTY CM. Also, it uses PuTTY as the back-end program to process. You can use different tabs in the same window, here. It allows you to see multiple connections.

There is no difference between PuTTY and this. Both look similar and perform, too. If you are familiar with the former one, the transition to this will be completely effortless.
