If you work on a Mac computer and need to read or write files from HDD, SSD or a flash drive formatted under Windows, you need Microsoft NTFS for Mac by Paragon Software. Write, edit, copy, move and delete files on Microsoft NTFS volumes from your Mac! Fast, seamless, easy to use.

All UMD students, faculty, and staff may download a 'Take Home' version of Read&Write Gold (R&WG) for their personal computers.

1. Open Safari

  • Draft a blog post, write that story or complete a school report wherever you are. Use Markdown to format text with easy keyboard shortcuts, subtle syntax highlighting, word counters with live update, and much more.

Using a browser other than Apple's Safari may result in your experience differing from these instructions.

2. Download the .dmg File

You will need to be authenticated to UMD to download Read&Write Gold.

If you are on campus and not already authenticated to UMD, the 'Sign In' page will appear when you attempt to download the program. Sign in using your UMD Internet ID and password.

If you are at an off campus IP addresses, you will need to use UMD VPN to be able to download the software if you attempt to download it. VPN instructions are available.

To start the download, click or select: Read&Write Gold Take Home.dmg. (DMG stands for Disk Image. It is a format commonly used to distribute files and applications among Apple computers.

Wait while 'Read&Write Gold Take Home.dmg' downloads. It is a large file (596MB) and may take a while to completely download. After it is fully downloaded, a Disk Image will appear where you downloaded it (usually the downloads folder).

3. Open the .dmg file and install the software

To open the downloaded .dmg disk image, double click it. An 'Opening Read&Write Gold Take Home.dmg' dialog box may appear that will say it is 'Checking volumes' or 'Verifying'. Then a disk image will be unpacked and its contents will appear:

Contents include 'Read&Write Gold.app' and a 'Disable Gatekeeper.app' Drag or copy the 'Read&Write Gold.app' to your Applications folder.

4. Open the software

Once the folder has been copied, click or select 'Read&Write Gold.app' to start the application.

If a 'Damaged' warning appears, complete one of the following work-arounds

The first time you start the application, you may receive a warning that 'Read&Write Gold.app' is damaged and can't be opened. You should move it to the Trash.'

The file is not damaged, but your security settings are preventing the application from opening. Select or click 'Cancel' button in the warning dialog box.

Then complete one of following work arounds to enable the application to open. (After you install this software be sure to reset your security settings as described in step number 8.)

Mac OS X 10.11 El Captain and older work-around

Note: you must be logged in with an administrator account for this procedure.

  1. Select 'System Preferences...' from the Apple Menu. Once in the System Preference window, open 'Security & Privacy'. Select or click the lock to make changes, if this panel is locked.
    You will need to type in your administrator password.
  2. Select or Click the 'Anywhere' radio button. Then click the lock to prevent further changes.
  3. Click or select 'Read&Write Gold.app' to start the application. (As previously mentioned, after you install this software be sure to reset your security settings as described in step number 8.)

OS X 10.12 Sierra and OS X 10.3 High Sierra work-around

  1. Select or click on the 'Disable Gatekeeper.app' in the Read&Write Gold Take Home disk image.
  2. A dialog box will appear. It will ask, 'Disable Gatekeeper.app is an application downloaded from the Internet. Are you sure you want to open it?' Select or click on the 'Open' button.
  3. A dialog box will appear. It will ask, 'Disable Gatekeeper? Click OK to disable Gatekeeper on this computer. This will allow applications to run, even if not identified by Apple. This setting can by changed back in the Security & Privacy system preferences'. Select or click on the 'OK' button.
  4. A dialog box will appear. It will say, 'osascript wants to make changes. Enter your password to allow this.' Enter your user name and administrator password.
  5. Open Read&Write Gold again.
  6. A dialog box may appear saying, 'Read&WriteGold.app For Mac' is an application downloaded from the Internet. Are you sure you want to open it? Select 'Open'. (As previously mentioned, after you install this software be sure to reset your security settings as described in step number 8.)

If you are asked to activate the software, you do not need to enter anything in the Read&Write activation dialog box. No serial number or activation code is needed.

5. Read&Write 6 GOLD for Mac toolbar should appear

Optional Voices

You may be notified that high quality voices are available for download on the Read&Write Essentials website.

Select 'Yes' or 'No'or Don't Ask' depending on your preference. It is optional and takes up 300 MB of disk space.

6. Reset your security settings

Select 'System Preferences...' from the Apple Menu. Once in the System Preference window, open 'Security & Privacy'. Select or click the lock to make changes.

You will need to type in your administrator password.

Select or click the 'Mac App Store and identified developers' radio button. Then click the lock to prevent further changes.
